Our Story

When six ambitious students decided to start a robotics team seven years ago, they parked themselves in the corner of a basement student lounge and began to build. As the space grew, so did the team, recruiting members and spreading awareness of STEM throughout the school. Now, having seen robots involved in everything from dance recitals, fashion shows, diversity presentations and competitions, every Horace Mann student is aware of robotics and the power of STEM.

At Horace Mann, we have three FIRST® Tech Challenge (FTC) teams: the Basement Lions, the 7890 Space Lions and the 81 Parallel Lions. We compete in FTC, a robotics competition in which teams are challenged to design, build, program and operate a small robot and compete with other teams in alliance matches. All Horace Mann Robotics teams demonstrate our commitment to STEM and collaborative learning through our performances at competitions and outreach ventures into HM and our greater community.

Our Divisions

Hardware

Our magnificient hardware team constructs mechanical marvels that even make the legendary blacksmith Hephaestus jealous. Forged in the deep hellscape of our robotics lab, these automatons are beauties to behold.

Software

These glorious individuals command robots with iron fists and warm hearts. They see through the façade of the Matrix and are able to control even the most unruly of bots. But don't worry--they're white hat. For the most part.

PR

PR keeps the general population informed and updated on everything FTC at Horace Mann. This elite team of orators, designers, and engineers is truly the backbone of our team.

Made with Love

Our robots are cage-free, free range, and have not even an ounce of gluten. We don't think they contain GMOs, but evolution is a tricky mistress.
